Meet Dr. Melissa Bangle

Dr. Bangle is a licensed clinical psychologist and chronic illness psychologist who specializes in helping individuals navigate the psychological effects of major life transitions, trauma, anxiety, depression, and long-term medical conditions. With deep expertise in health and rehabilitation psychology, she provides integrative, evidence-based care for people managing chronic illnesses, injuries, and disabilities. Her background is unique. Initially pursuing a career in occupational therapy or medicine due to her passion for supporting people with disabilities, Dr. Bangle earned her Bachelor’s in Physiology and Exercise Science from West Virginia University School of Medicine. While working in the health and fitness field, she shifted toward psychology, completing both her Master’s and Doctorate degrees with a focus on rehabilitation psychology. She received advanced training within the VA healthcare system, which deepened her understanding of the cultural and clinical needs of Veterans with disabilities. Her wide- ranging experience enables her to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to meet complex client needs — whether emotional, cognitive, or physical — and guide clients toward a better quality of life.

A Unified Approach

The common thread in Dr. Bangle’s work is helping clients regain control, confidence, and quality of life when facing long-term emotional and physical health challenges. As a psychologist for medical trauma and adjustment to disability therapist, she uses a whole- person approach to guide her clients toward sustainable recovery. She supports clients by helping them:

  • Manage how chronic illness or injury impacts energy, motivation, self-worth, and daily function.
  • Build communication strategies for navigating healthcare systems, strengthening relationships, and finding meaningful social support.
  • Challenge negative self-talk, unhelpful beliefs, and grieve lost identities or dreams with compassion and perspective.
  • Enhance well-being through improved sleep, lifestyle change, and mind-body strategies.
  • Strengthen brain health through strategies for attention, memory, executive function, and problem-solving.

Treatment & Expertise

Dr. Bangle is extensively trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and integrates mindfulness, clinical hypnosis, and grief counseling into her work. She also has specialized experience in conducting presurgical psychological evaluations for procedures such as spine surgery, bariatric surgery, and organ transplantation. She brings a biopsychosocial lens to treatment — acknowledging the complex interaction between body, mind, and environment in health and healing.
